Archos 70 Hands-On, Feedback says Good-Value

Posted on 05 November 2010, Last updated on 10 June 2018 by

Archos 70 _5_ The price of the Galaxy Tab is gradually coming down but it’s clear that it will never reach the 250 Euro price of the Archos 70. It looks the same, comes with 8GB of storage, a similar processor, similar operating system and plays back video just like the Tab. So what’s the difference?

Balazs of Ndevil unboxes the Archos 70 in the video below and Charbax has a text/video review up. You’ll hear them talk about some of the very important differences between this and the Galaxy Tab but lets list them all here so you can compare.

Galaxy Tab Extra Features:

  • Phone, 3G, SMS, MMS
  • 1024×600 screen
  • 3.2MP Auto-focus camera and 480p video cam
  • Docking port for accessories
  • Stereo Speakers
  • 16GB Storage
  • Samsung software suite including Samsung keyboard
  • Access to Google Market and Google apps suite
  • GPS

Archos 70 Extra features

  • USB OTG (unconfirmed)
  • Micro USB Charging and connecting
  • HDMI out port
  • Kickstand

Full specs for the Archos 70 here. Galaxy Tab here.

There may be others differences and in terms of software, some of the issues on the Archos 70 can be fixed through hacks but the summary is that on the Galaxy Tab, you’re paying 450 Euros for voice,3G, hi-res screen, auto-focus cam, 8GB storage, GPS and the Samsung Google software. That’s a lot of money for features that you probably don’t need when you’re lazing around at home and if the Archos 70 is as good as people are saying (I’m getting good feedback from owners so far) and if Archos push that V2.2 firmware out ASAP then the Archos 70 is definitely a better value product for sofa-surfing. When it comes to mobility though, the Tab has the edge although with the Viewpad 7 coming in at 399 Euros in the next few weeks, there’s quite a head-to-head building up on this 7 inch space. (Actually there’s at least 16 devices in our database, more to come soon!)

So how’s this 7 inch space shaping up for you?

Archos 70 Internet Tablet also has:

    – Stereo speakers

    – Google Marketplace through gApps4Archos.apk findable on Google

    – GPS through Bluetooth with dedicated BT GPS module or BT phone tethering with AGPS (see http://www.jbmm.fr/2010/10/07/recette-archos-gen-8-a-la-sauce-gps/ ), through Google WiFi Maps (works in all densely populated areas, is actually faster location lock than “regular” GPS, even faster than A-GPS using 3G)

    – 3G, 4G, WiMax etc through Mifi and Bluetooth tethering.

    – The Galaxy Tab docking port for accessories is proprietary, can’t we use all the same and even more standard PC peripheral accessories on USB host. Obviously, for more than USB keyboard/mouse and mass storage, it would require the right drivers in Android. I hope there will be USB HD webcam drivers for HD video conferencing on HDTV, that would be nice.

    – The built-in Webcam can also record 480p video, but only front-facing, no back-facing cameras on this one.

Few questions I still have about Galaxy Tab:

    – What are the true limitations of 1080p, I still want to see proof 1080p of both high profiles and high bitrates works, and it seems DTS and 5.1 AC3 is not working? Also, no way to support 4GB+ files?

    – Any Samba/Upnp file streaming and what are the bitrate limitations of that? Archos supports this, limitations still to be tested in optimal conditions. This way, you can basically have terrabytes of multimedia in your tablet when streaming over networked local storage. Could possibly even stream multimedia remotely over the Internet. Archos launches any video link of any format from the web browser in the video player, streams instantly. Can Galaxy Tab do that?

    – Archos 70 Internet Tablet is 300gr, Galaxy Tab is 380gr. Is Archos slightly more compact as well?

    – Archos supports installation of alternative OS through the “Special Edition Firmware”. So depending on community support, we may get alternative Android, Angstrom, Chrome OS, Ubuntu and even Meego running on this. Multi-booting of all that would be fun.

    – Archos has made custom apps for video, audio, pictures, those are now integrated as apps within Android, thus fully hardware accelerated. Also available as widgets of different sizes. One cool feature for example is that by simple file names, it searches some online database to bring in the CD cover, DVD cover and also descriptions and stuff directly into your multimedia UI.

    – It may support more codecs than Galaxy Tab. For example also system storage can be formatted in EXT3 in settings, so files larger than 4GB can be stored, useful on the $349 250GB version if you have many MKV in your collection. DTS audio works, also full AC3, Flac, Ogg Vorbis, WMA etc etc. Also video codecs Mpeg2 works (with the only plugin), I think RMVB, On2 (pre-VP codec) etc are supported. I’m sure the Galaxy Tab can support good video and audio codecs support, though as with DTS audio, it seems maybe samsung didn’t activate support of all or take the time to provide all the codecs yet.

    – Sure the better (more IPS like) higher resolution screen, back facing camera, compass, gps and agps, and built in 3G, sure those things are nice. But I agree not worth upwards 400€ price difference. German ISPs are selling Galaxy Tab for 799€ unlocked and people will pay 1500€ or more if they choose to pay the 2-year 40€/month contracts. With the 70€ unlocked Mifi, German users could get 10-20€/month 3G SIM cards at Tchibo or Aldi without any contracts meaning they can also change SIM if another deal is cheaper next month.

  2. bill says:

If I have to buy a bluetooth GPS dongle and a tetherable phone or MiFi for internet, wouldn’t the cost of owning an Archos be the same or more expensive than owning a Galaxy Tab (at least in the US)? There goes Archos’ advantage. Plus, I have to carry more stuff.

  3. Charbax says:

Huawei e5830 Mifi is about 70€ unlocked and can feed 3G based “GPS” on 3G antenna triangulation. The of course you can use the mifi for anything else, and could be argued to be more future proof solution as you can use an LTE Mifi when they get released in the next 3 months, as well as HSUPA+, WiMax, other types of 4G and even White Spaces, thus without having to buy another device or being locked on the 2-year contract.

  4. Chet says:

So it is just as expensive as the Galaxy Tab. Then I’ll just get a Galaxy Tab. Here, we have to get 2 year contracts all the time anyway and I don’t switch carriers (10 years and going). I love my upgrade subsidies. I always just use my upgrade to get the new stuff. Often times I’m offered the upgrade price even though I’m not eligible yet.

Also, carrying less stuff is always good.

  5. ash says:

    Galaxy Tab > A70. End.

  6. Charbax says:

Do you factor in value for price?

A ferrari is better than a Fiat punto. But to get you from point a to point b in the city, it’s not worth 50 times more expensive and 5x worth gas mileage. That’s why only rich people buy them to show off.

  7. anand says:

Wow, the Galaxy Tab is a Ferrari and the Archos is a Fiat Punto? I’d pay the small extra price for a Ferrari. The Punto seems overpriced now.

  8. Charbax says:

I was just proving a point. They are both ferraris, with Archos not having a back facing cam and 3G for less than half the price. Which ferrari do you want now?

  9. aftermath says:

Value? I think that a free pair of pants is a good value. A free pair of pants that bursts into flames at one point down the road while I’m wearing them is a BAD value.

To call the Archos 70 a good value is an unqualified lie. If you want to be truthful, then say it’s a “good value for now” and then when the battery wears down to nothing as ALL BATTERIES WILL DO it will be a “pile of obsolete by thin-as-the-excuse design junk”.

  10. asdf says:

    Um… pants? Nice metaphor.

And if ALL batteries wear down to nothing, then how does the Galaxy Tab reign over the Archos 70?

  11. han says:

Archos made and unofficially released the Google Market hack.

  12. beemer says:

The real problem with Archos 70 is the RAM capacity. Not specified in its web, seems to be only 256MB what is totally insuficient to run Android 2.2 applications.

Galaxy tab runs on 512MB. Other differences between both tablets are justified by the price, but RAM one causes Archos not to be really usable for most porpouses if confirmed.

  13. Charbax says:

Galaxy Tab, as well as same hardwared Galaxy S were designed when there only was eclair. Froyo runs better with half the RAM compared to eclair. Gingerbread and Honeycomb will likely run even better requiring even less RAM. It’s how Google works on software, it gets always faster, more optimized thus requiring less hardware. Unlike Wintel, software gets more and more optimized. I think its likely no performance difference can be even noticed between 256 and 512MB tablets under froyo. As multi-tasking is thus managed in a way to run basically unlimited amounts of apps and tabs no matter how much RAM you have.

  14. beemer says:

This may be true for the OS but not for the Apps.
A single browser with up to sevent tabs allowed in the Android browser can fill out the memory.

My HTC Desire, Froyo, 596MB RAM, leaves me between 225 and 181 MB free without the browser opened. 256MB less means 0 memory. Even if optimized I need to see the free memory numbers given by the OS before take decissions.

  15. Charbax says:

@beemer, there you have it, 2.2 doesn’t even support more than 250MB ram even if you have it.

  16. sean says:

@charbax, there you have it, 2.2 can use up 415 MB of ram if you have it.

i guess the archos tablets are spending a lot of precious cpu time doing memory management.

  17. asdf says:

It amazes me how you guys have enough energy to argue, but you’re too lazy to kill some application processes. C’mon guys. A single app DOES NOT take up 250 MB of RAM.

  18. alan says:

Ya, RAM will be an issue for tablets when tablet specific apps start coming out. I can see a single app taking up all the RAM (minus OS specific RAM usage). There will probably be some image and video processing apps specifically made for tablets that could take up a good amount of memory. As the browser gets more robust, users will start viewing more complex web pages and/or have more windows/tabs open so memory usage will go up.

  19. Charbax says:

Even the most javascript intensive websites don’t use more than few tens of mb per tab. The trick with Android is it concentrates the ram to the app that is in front and saves state and uses apis for apps and tabs that are behind. Thus you can multi-task unlimited amounts of apps and tasks using very little ram. Even video and photo editing apps couldn’t use up all that ram if they tried.

  20. sean says:

play some Flash videos and see the memory usage skyrocket.

  21. Gustave says:

The Archos tablets only have less than 256 MB for app storage while the Galaxy Tab has around 1.5 GB. That’s 6 times more app storage for the Galaxy Tab.

Archos maxes out at 65 Mbps on 802.11n while the Galaxy Tab maxes out at 150 Mbps on 802.11n. The Galaxy Tab’s WiFi operates on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands while the Archos tablets only operate in the crowded 2.4 GHz band.

  22. Charbax says:

App storage is dedicated in software. Archos could let you use up to the whole eight GB nand for app storage if you want that much, and use the MicroSD for multimedia storage.

Five ghz support on WiFi doesn’t mean it can realistically be used for anything. Do you plan to transfer gygabytes to your tablets limited storage over wifi? More likely all anyone needs is enough bandwidth for streaming of video.

  23. Paul says:

Archos could but they don’t so it only has around 256 MB of app storage.

5 GHz support does realistically mean something: better ability to achieve faster WiFi throughput. Faster transferring of files over WiFi is always good. Be it 1 MB or 2 GB.

Archos can’t stream videos very well anyway (http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=37895).

  24. beemer says:

Its important to tell between internal and external storage memory. Apps can only be installed in internal memory except when they allow to be installed in external one.

In My Desire, with Froyo, I’ve almost 50 apps. 12 of them allows sdCard installation, rest of them, including all Google app updates (except Goohle Sky) doesn’t.

  25. Charbax says:

Archos has up to 8GB internal storage which could be used for apps, just software issue, not hardware.

  26. pete says:

wow, app storage on the archos sucks.

  27. Paul says:

For the gamers out there, the Archos tablets use the PowerVR SGX530 GPU core while the Galaxy Tab uses the PowerVR SGX540 core which is far superior. This will become an issue as future versions of Android provide better GPU support and games that take advantage of it.

    SGX530 – 14 MPolys/s, 500Mpx/s @ 200 MHz
    SGX540 – 35 MPolys/s, 1Gpx/s @ 200 MHz

  28. Charbax says:

None of the current 20 thousand Android games can take advantage of that.

  29. Paul says:

Hence, the “This will become an issue as future versions of Android provide better GPU support and games that take advantage of it” statement.

Archos is not a good buy for prospective tablet gamers.

  30. sean says:

    @paul

the low ram on the archos will also limit the ability of playing future games. with larger screens, i can see game developers making more complex games specifically for android tablets. no more of these time killer games that you play for a few minutes.

  31. photographer says:

    Hi together,

I am sorry and have to apologize at first my English. I am German and do not practise English much since leaving school in 1966. I hope you can understand what I mean.

Please let us talk about current market prices in Germany and in EUR and not about the suggested from Samsung what nobody has payed! That is not fairly.

Current price is about 630,00 EUR and that is far away from what you talk about and more less. That is fact for units without any contaract, plans ore any other. It is unlocked and unbranded. I seems it will decrease shortly down under the 600,00 EUR. That is a huge difference when we have to compare something with facts.

The device works perfect out of the box without any hacks and I think, there are a lot of customers, who do not want to root or to hack. That is only something for freaks.

You talked also about MiFi. This one costs in Germany about 120,00 EUR !!!! What you talk about is from England and unlocked and the old model. There is no garanty that it will work as expected with all providers. That is also fact. A high quality GPS Mouse is about 50,00 EUR

And now compare and you will see, you have to pay 250,00 EUR for your Achos 7, 120,00 EUR for MiFi, 50,00 EUR for GPS Mouse, some calbles and power plugs and you need a pocket, to take that every where with you! Ha Ha Ha :-) but what you not have, is a mobile phone function yet. But you have bought one before, and waht have you payed for??? I think a lot.

Let us talk about 300,00 EUR for a cheap one, without plan or contact.

And now, what is it in summery? 250,00 EUR plus 120,00 EUR, plus 50,00 EUR, plus 20,00 EUR pocket and cables plus 300,00 EUR for mobile phone.

That is? 740,00 EUR and now you wonder. The Galaxy Tab is current 630,00 EUR. Hey, is that wrong ??? Or is that right and correctly ??

The illusion that the Archos 7 is a cheap one is crached down. It is not cheap in comparing th ereal facts and usability.

Sorry, Charbax, I now you love Archos, and you are looking a lot for all arguments to kill others, but in this you get failed, when you read whats below is following.

Then you have to make a difference what is also very interesting.

You have on one hand the consumers and on the other hand business users. That is a very different look. Business users won’t take two devices to be every time and everywhere mobile. On this point is any other device on current market not available yet.

I do not think, that the upcoming Viewsonic 7 ist really competitive to the Galaxy Tab checking the specs. There is different resolution of the screen and some others, what is not confirmed yet, because there are no specs available in Germany yet.

Now I come to the end. When you compare, to not compare apples and oranges and compare differents view about different buyers. Consumers and business users are very diffent.

    Thanks for reading.

Huawei e5830 Mifi starts at 40€ in Germany: http://cgi.ebay.de/Huawei-E5830-Modem-Ohne-simlock-neu-OVP-/220691742643?pt=DE_Computer_Peripherie_Netzwerk&hash=item336240bfb3

No GPS BT required as even the cheapest Mifi does the GPS stuff using cellular antenna positioning.

As for a cheap mobile phone, get this for 18€ unlocked if you haven’t got one already: http://www.preissuchmaschine.de/in-Handy-ohne-Vertrag/Klassisches-Handy/Nokia-1616.html

For SIM get a 10€ Tchibo, per month, no contract, it’s enough for Tablet use if you don’t constantly stream DivX movies over 3G. Aldi also has some cheap SIM card solution. I’m sure there are others. No contract, just get the cheapest ones on offer at any point in time. Your 40€ Mifi is unlocked.

  33. Charbax says:

Huawei e5830 Mifi starts at 40€ in Germany: Search “Huawei e5830” on ebay.de (only way to get cheap unlocked)

As for a cheap mobile phone, get this for 18€ unlocked if you haven’t got one already: Search Nokia 1616 on preissuchmachine.

  34. Charbax says:

The real price for the Huawei e5830 is more like 80€ unlocked I think. At that price you will always find them “Sofort Kaufen” on ebay, the thing is some resellers buy many and manually unlock them for you. Otherwise you have to find it locked and unlock it yourself for 15€ with online unlock code. The trick is Huawei only makes business with telecom companies, but buying unlocked through third parties like ebay is not illegal. I bought my Mifi on visit in UK for £49 at Three store and unlocked myself afterwards with the 15€ online unlock codes.

Sorry, you talk about consumer options and you talk only about the very cheapest ways to get connect to the internet.

Business users have a flat rate for phone calls and internet and they will have SIM cards from the three big players on the market. They do not buy from Tchibo or Aldi.

But that was something I have not talk about in my comment.

The cheapest Huawei e5830 as buy option is 79,90 EUR. You could not take the price from a auktion what is not ended yet. That is not fairly.

I have not understand what you mean with GPS BT is not required.

When you will use it mobile in a car, I think you need to have gps mouse.

Or is the gps mouse in the Huawei integrated? Sorry, that are my obstacles with English may be.

The Nokia 1616 has not Cellular GPS Modul integrated. The price you talk about is also not the end price and not definitive. This is really a cellphone, what a business user never will buy, because it is the cheapest, without any business function. Ok, may be consumers buy this to use it with your Archos 7 to get cellphone function. But I am not a dreamer, that anyone will buy this playtool. Sorry.

That is exactly what I mean. You are using some arguments that are not correctly. Sorry for this.

All what you answered may be correctly for freaks they will have a lot of fun as handicraft enthusiast, but not this is not usual for normal consumers and impossibly for business users.

I wish you a lot of fun with your Archos devices and further a good hand find a lot of aruments like yours in your answer, to kill others.

I will have a lot of fun with my Samsung Galaxy Tab, what works best for me, to drive as a Key Account Manager responsible for business in whole Germany, to navigate with a lot of comfort, make phone calls with my bluetooth set, take pictures from my industrial customers processes lines, take videos to explain inside my company the R & D Deapartement to find solutions for my customer. Make Powerpoint presentations in meetings by my costumers, write my visit reports, make my calculations with Excel Sheets and will be happy, that I all have only in the pocket of my Jacket.

Comimg home and my work is completely finished.

That is usabiltity and I have waited of such a solution as I started using mobile devices 20 years ago, beginning with Palm Pilot ( do you know that as well?) following PSION 3 and PSION 5, first Pocket PC like CASIO and others,

Now I have very good solution, a all in one for a cheap price ( I payed 599,00 EUR without plan and without contract) and I do not need a heavy notebook, a bag for this and a lot of cables and have a lot power for a long workday.

That is what the Archos never can compete as well. Sorry, but this is not to discuss.

  36. bill says:

Excellent post. You’re exactly right. The Archos tablets are not really cheaper when you try to get it up to par with the Galaxy Tab. Though it still falls behind the Galaxy Tab. The Tab has 6x the app storage, 2x the RAM, 2x more powerful GPU, 2x faster WiFi and no need to carry some MiFi, tetherable phone and/or GPS dongles around.

  37. bill says:

    Edit:
The Galaxy Tab has 8x app storage (2 GB vs 256 MB).

  38. Charbax says:

More like 3x the price, 1.3x the weight, 2x less codecs, 1x same ARM Cortex A8 1ghz 45nm CPU performance and the rest of the differences are unnecesary for most users on Android 2.2 and beyond.

There is a reason wifi ipad is 100x more popular with consumers than more expensive 3G ipad.

  39. ant says:

Price ends up being very similar when adding on mobile broadband hardware and plans.

  40. baDboyzs says:

    Hi all
Photographer from Germany does have a good point.

Ordinary consumers buy a gadget and expect it to work fine out of the box, like a brand new car which can take them from A to B, period.

Only freaks like to squeeze more out of the gadget or bend it to suit his err…special needs ( nerds ).

For the rest like us, enjoy the thing straight as it should be, why spend more and look for trouble ?

Is Archos a consumer product or a freak’s product ? You decide

  41. photographer says:

Sorry, but it seems, I do not find the correct words with my less English knowledge.

I do not mean the consumers are ordinary. What I mean, and I try to explain it as best I can, that consumers have other and different points what is nessesary for them. They will usual have a lot of apps, they usual will play games, they will use facebook and twitter and others.
This is not complete, but I hope you understand what I mean.

Business users need a device for best workflow. They like also to play games sometimes, but that is not so important. They will and have to work with device. They have to read Office Word documents, to edit them sometimes and send it back to their company or to their customers. Sames as Excel Sheets with calculations. Same for presentations with Powerpoint. And so on and so on.

That is different to consumers usability, or not?

I hope this point is clarified now.

I think its clearly evident that the Galaxy Tablet is a superior piece of hardware compared to the Archos 70. Given the price difference, the Archos 70 is an excellent alternative to the Galaxy Tablet today. Its hard to make a case for what the Galaxy tablet can do in the future when so little is known about Android’s tablet OS (Honeycomb). My guess is by the time its released, the Galaxy tablet will be long in the tooth and faster and more powerful products will be on everyone’s wishlist. For the here and now, at almost half the price of the Galaxy Tablet (In the US), the differences are more usage based than specs based. I am no Archos zealot like Charbax, but like the author of the article, I see the Archos 70 as a bargin for a product. The Archos 10.1 might be even more so.

  50. photographer says:

I never said the the Archos is a bad device. I hope that there are no missunderstandings.

The Archos 7 is a great solution for all, who do not need the benefits of the Galaxy Tab and would take two devices for overall mobility.

But it makes really no sense to compare this as all in one mobile solution.

If you buy a Archos, you have to have twice a mobile phone and other equipment, if the Archos shall be a all in one mobile solution.

    Not more, not less.

  51. photographer says:

Oh, I have to complete, what I have forgotten.

I agree with you that I have to make a difference between the US market and the EU market.

For the US market are other rules to anticipate. There are more users, they will have only WiFi and 3G.

And then the advantages of the Galaxy tab get more less important to buy this in US.

That is why Samsung offer the Galaxy Tab now also only with Wifi in the US.

But that is not the same in the EU market as well.

My closely look is only on or to the EU market, because I have no experience with others. And this EU market may also differ beetween special the United Kingdom and other countries like Germany.

That makes it much more difficult to compare something with fairness.

Different markets, different useres and different requirements can not be compared really.

  52. roberto says:

thanks guys. i was thinking about getting an archos. the severly limited app storage and ram are pretty big issues. i guess t-mobile and samsung are going to be getting my money this christmas.

they’re the same price anyway when you factor in getting mobile broadband which i will be getting. t-mobile’s hspa+ is very fast here. been with t-mobile for 7 years now. i love their retentions department. i get discount prices every year.

  53. Ryan says:

Bottom line is the average person does not want to carry around a 7″ device all the time. There might be a small niche of people that do, but that’s it. Most will keep their current phone. Many probably already own a smartphone with a screen from 3.5-4.3″ where a tablet is a toy/luxury item and not always carried with them. So going the Galaxy route with a 3g connection is just overkill for them. Trying to factor in the extras required to bring the archos up to the galaxy’s functionality in order to cost justify is meaningless. If you need/want that functionality and are willing to pay for it, then it just makes sense to go Galaxy. But for many that don’t, there is no reason to spend the extra money unless you’re just an app whore and need to have a ton of apps on the tablet at all times.

  54. photographer says:

Sorry, but where did you research that, what you wrote down here?????

That is your personal opinion, not more.

But you have also to accept that their also a lot of other opinions.

I knows a company with 400 sales representitives and they will buy the galaxy tab instead Blackberrys this year.

That happens what people also wants.

The Archos is a good and cheep device for people doing really sofa surfing with twice a cellphone for calls and as possibility to get internet access outside from WiFi. Thats it.

But there is also a huge market for people, what want to do their business on their business trips around the year with a gadget for mobile all in ONE solution taking only ONE device in their pockets.

And that do not fit to Archos or iPads. Not more, not less!

  55. Ryan says:

one company…. more than an opinion, it’s spending time in multiple forums for android, webOS and WP7. For many going to 4″ and 4.3″ was a stretch. The “average” user will not want to carry around a 7″ phone on a normal basis. And I bet if you polled those 400 sales reps, the majority won’t want to carry around a 7″ phone.

And you contradict yourself at the end saying “ONE solution taking only ONE device in their pockets.”

Well unless everyone wears loose pants with big pockets, that just isn’t reality. Or maybe everyone is expected to wear blazers with big chest pockets. Can’t imagine sitting at a table with a 7″ tablet pressed into your thigh. And to boot, the Galaxy Tablet is thicker, wider and heavier. Two of the three dimensions that make it less pocketable on top of being heavier.

So why don’t you name the company and we can call up the sale reps and poll them one by one and see if they’d rather carry around a galaxy phone as opposed to a galaxy tab on a daily basis, on vacation, on a night out on the town, running to the store, going to a game, sitting in a movie theater or at restaurant. And you can’t say it’ll go in a jacket because you don’t always wear a jacket unless seasons no longer exist, and it’s always less than 70 degrees out. Or women wearing dresses and skirts carrying small purses. Heck, the tab is bigger than many purses women carry unless they’re supposed to put it in their briefcase which is really inconvenient for a phone you always need to have on your person. And I’m sure of those 400 reps there are quite a few women.

People who want a 7″ tab as their phone 100% of the time are a niche, plain and simple.

  56. photographer says:

It makes no sense to answer once more to your comment.

It is only filled with polemics, not more.

But thanks a lot for explaining what do you want and what do you not want!

It will help a lot to future buyers to make a decision.

  57. Vakeros says:

    Ryan,
I guess your Sales Reps all dress very casually to business meetings. Obviously don’t bother to wear suits or a jacket of any description. You comment about Blazers points this out – don’t you have blazers with an inside pocket?
You have to remember photographer pointed out EU and US differences and also business and consumer.
Personally I believe the best size for a device is 5.6″ screen and a samll bezel. This is actually what will fit in trousers of an average guy (me), not a tight cut but normal fit. I have trialled this with various sizes.
However for a device you can carry everywhere 10″ is too big – you may as well carry 12″ or a bigger – because you need a dedicated bag. 7″ or even 8″ like the Sony Vaio P is still possible to take everywhere without needing a bag – assuming you have a jacket/coat with pockets.

  58. photographer says:

    Hi VAKEROS,

thx a lot for your comment.

You pointed out what RYAN seems is not able to read as written. His last comment is full of polemics. He turned my words out of my mouth as it fits to his opinion.

He has not realised that I differ between consumers and business users. I don not know why he is not able to read it and understand it.

Using forums as market research is absolutely turning around facts and figueres of any devices. This only shows a very small window of really markets. Using that as arguments shows his incompetence. Sorry.

There is also a lot of missing knowledge about business cloth.

Yes, we in Germany know about Business Casual, what means jacket and shirt without tie. Jeans, shorts and others are not allowed ever.

He also talked about womens dress. I never have seen a business women without her handbag, so Ryans defination is absolutely funny.

But it is boring a lot to answer his comments.

He shall be happy with his quipment and pray his statements.

I think other posters and readers here will be able to live with that. Me too.

  59. Ryan says:

I think my point is we use our phones for more than just business. after 5pm, weekends and so forth. Maybe the European crowd is different, but I run my Sprint account for our sales force, and I don’t know one of them that would go beyond a 4-4.3″ phone for daily use unless they finally went edge to edge with a screen and could fit something bigger in the same size case. The Galaxy phones, Moto Droids and HTC phones are highly capable and much easier to carry.

I’d still bet money in two years if you took a poll on people that only own one phone, the numbers for 7″ tablets are going to be small in comparison to the 4″ range. And if I fail to see your point, you fail to see mine. Did you miss the days when companies vied to have the smallest cell phone possible. Those tiny Nokia and Ericcson phones. Even now as bezels decrease and screen sizes increase. They’re trying to find that sweet spot in size. I’m not saying there are people out there that won’t enjoy carrying a 7″ tablet as their primary phone. I just don’t see it being the masses.

And fyi, a woman in a dress outside of work usually carries a clutch of some sort. Something that is less than the size of a 7″ tablet.

Happy to see I bore you. In America we generally can debate back and forth without resorting to personal insults. I guess that’s not true in Europe. Cheers.

  60. photographer says:

Sorry, but now I am absolutely speechless.

I could it better explain in German, but I do not think, that you speak it. So I have to try it with easy words what I mean, and it could be, that sometimes it is not correct, depending on missing words. But when you speak German as I tried to speak / write in English you will understand how it is.

I think you do not really mind what I wrote. Ok, it does not matter.

I have made the difference between consumer using and business using, but however you will not imagine that.

And now it would be very interesting for me, to know, how you can work on a 4″ Display with your cellphone to edit and read as example an Excel sheet, an Powerpoint sheet, a Word document or an PDF file. How do you edit this on that “big” screen? I am not to old to learn some new things for better usability with my equipment.

If you able to impress me, it could be, I change my decision to the Galaxy Tab and go back working with my litte screen cellphone as well.

But I need for this an external keyboard, for writing business letters and so on. Oh, no, I will only take ONE device and the keyboard will be a second one. Sorry, thats then is not to me.

I also did not talk about womens dress outside of work. Why do you explain me, what womens dress will be outside work? It is the same in old Europe, but in Europe most have little bags, to put in all their cosmetics, cellphones and Galaxy Tabs and other playtools. That may be different in the US.

You will wonder and see, in two years, that Mr. Apple Steve Jobs will sell a smaller iPad with 7″ as well. The market will stress him to turn his mind very hard. That I will bed on.

And now, explain me with your perfect knowledge of the mobile market, why all big players worldwide will sell 7″ tabs in 2011 with cellphone function?

They not idiots and they know better than you, why they will do it.

Have a nice day, my special friend, and keep cool.

  61. Vakeros says:

    Guten Tag photographer,
Wann wir mussen auf Deutsch schreiben, dann mussen wir, Ja?

Aber Ich kann nicht so gut auf Deutsch wie Sie koennen auf Englisch, und ich bin ein Englander. Also…

I think Ryan is seeing the Tab as a phone first and a Tablet second. He wants his people to use it primarily and mainly as a phone. You however are think about using it to replace your notebook / netbook and also be able to use the phone etc. functionality. So you are approaching the same device from two different angles.
Speaking as a neutral (:-) I think Ryan’s sales force would love to have an iPad beater, they can carry around with them everywhere and doing everything the iPad can do and with a sharper resolution (The ppi on the Tab is far greater than the iPad) and get all their work done and use GPS etc and not need a separate phone. It depends on the amount of hours they would use a phone and use a netbook / notebook.
Personally I am considering giving my wife the Galaxy S and getting a Tab for myself. The only downside for me is that the Tab doesn’t have as good a camera. They should have made it 5MP with optical zoom (would thicken the unit, but then could have an even bigger battery and a kick stand. Probably add 60 grammes and 2 mm to the thickness.

  62. photographer says:

    Guten Tag Vakeros,

dein Deutsch ist doch auch ganz gut :-))

thx for your reply, once more you pointed out, what are my wants using the Galaxy Tab. I do not like to take more than one device with me, to do my work. After practise it now for about two weeks I am very satisfied with this. No Netbook is needed and no notebook is needed, and the best is, that I can take it in my Jacket and have the full function for my workdays.

The camara is not the best, your right, but I use this only for picture documentation or short videos to understand proceses by my customers what have to be optimized, to share this with the R&D departement, that they understand to give me a solution to help my customer with better solutions in future. For that the camera is not so bad.

When I have to take best pictures, I have a Nikon D3, sorry, that is not like my House, my car, my boat, my wife :-))

I am a professional photographer too, so I need this to take wedding pictures with extremely lowlights in churches without any flash. The D3 is able to do this. But that I cannot compare, because it costs a lot , lot, lot money with some high quality objectives like 2.8 AFS 70-200 VR zoom.

But every time and never a build in camera from a cellphone will take really high quality pictures. My be for postcards, ok, but never more. The digital chip ist to small can to that. And it does not matter, when it has 5 or 8 Megapixels. It can not be a hight quality digital camera too.

Thank you for your comments, what not far from my thinking using a mobile ALL IN ONE device doing my business with less weight and a lot of comfort during my business travels around the year.

    Kind regards
    Hans

    To all here!

I bag your pardon, when I wrote here so much about the Galaxy Tab.

This is in fact the wrong place because the part of departure was the ARCHOS 7.

I am sorry for that and hope you will understand it.

  64. Roberto2 says:

Hi everyone, i think comparing this 2 devices is pointless, i mean, how much do u think it will cost the Galaxy Tab if you take some of the hardware pieces and leave it just with the ones in the archos 70, i think it would be almost the same price as the archos, so, it´s a matter of needs, i don´t need a 3g connection or phone functions in a pad, i have wifi options everywhere i go even on the street, and my old nokia phone still works like a charm and i think i will go for an Archos this time, maybe in the future if i travel alot i would need more connectivity and will have to buy something like the galaxy tab, but now it is not necessary for me. PS sorry for my english, it´s not my birth language

  65. Chuck Daly says:

Here in the US, a company provided smartphone is to be carried at all times, so Ryan makes a valid point about how silly it would be to expect employees to cart around a 7″ tablet after work hours. As I previously mentioned, it all comes down to usage. The vast majority of tablets are purchased in the US. In the US tablets are primarily used as couch surfing, media devices. The archos 70 will fill the needs of many americans who AREN’T looking for an all in one device.

  66. tscotsman says:

well i got the tab, went against the archos this time round. absolutely love it, great piece of kit. BTW charbax samsung can handle AC3 just fine. DTS can be done with other video players from the market. You know aswell as I do that both cannot have more than 4gb files, hence the reason archos are gonna split those files, any word on that yet? didnt think so. The app storage is gonna be a big issue for just about everyone im using 311mb at the moment and ive only had it since sunday. Enjoy juggling apps all the time, wth 1.65gb free i dont need to worry about that.

  67. Ryan says:

photog….no worries about talking so much about the galaxy. It’s all good. This is fun new tech and whatever flavor you get we’re still generally all in the same boat.

I think there is some language gap because as Vakeros is pointing out. I’m still having a hard time imagining the average consumer “wanting” to always carry around a 7″ tablet as their primary phone or replacing their phone altogether. I’m in the medical device industry, could reps benefit from having a lot of literature, photos and technique videos on a 7″ device that’s always with them? Sure. Does it mean they would want to carry around a 7″ tablet and throw away their Blackberry, webOS or Android phone? Confidently no. There is nothing quick about whipping out a 7″ tablet to quickly reply to a text message or email. Try to do it non nonchalantly in a meeting or around a group of people and you’ll attract a lot of attention. Try to just bang out a quick sentence in a text, and I guarantee it takes an extra 15-20 seconds to do. Send about 60 text messages a day and you’ve added over 2 hours per week in time spent texting.

If it’s a cultural thing, and Europeans don’t mind wielding such a phone all the time, more power to you. I have no problem editing invoices with tables in Docs To Go on my 4″ vga screen with a slide out keyboard that leaves my entire screen usable. I don’t understand how easy it is on a 7″ screen when 2/3 of it is taken up by an on screen keyboard. You lose all point of reference.

And if there is a need for deeper office work, even a 7″ tablet won’t be convenient. I have a sub 3lb 12″ notebook that does the trick. If I want rid myself of that, I would need at least a 8.9 or 10.2″ tablet preferably with higher res than 600. Even at 600 there is still a lot of scrolling going on left to right.

And what if you don’t have your BT headset or it’s not convenient to talk on speakerphone? Do you just walk around with a giant tablet to your ear? I would think that would look pretty silly.

My sales force could benefit from a tablet if they knew how to utilize it. Not one of them would want to carry around a 7″ one as their only phone. At best they would still use their bb, android or webOS phone and leave the tablet in the work bag whether it’s 7, 8.9 or 10.2″. Tablets are the ideal travel companion as they take up very little space in a bag, almost a 1/2 the space than my laptop if it were a 10.2″ model. Even adding in a BT keyboard or one of the keyboard clad cases would still take up less space and be lighter. So as a companion, I can see it. As a primary device, I just can’t.

I’m in medical device sales. I’ll show docs a quick photo or to, and have even shown a surgical technique animation or video on my phone. It’s quick and easy. It’s the device I can one hand through just about anything while doing something else. I can’t imagine one handing my way through that on a 7″ tablet. Now if I have that docs attention and we’re sitting at a table, I’d more than likely have my laptop where it’s much easier to see, point things out and so forth. Having a tablet here would make sense especially with the capacitive screen making it easy to breeze through powerpoint presentations, photos and such. Now an important call comes in, and I have to excuse myself for a minute. Sorry doc, I need to take my phone, I mean my tablet. Whip out your iphone and play doodlejump for a few instead of being able to continue looking at the presentation or flipping through some photos of cases.

Say my niece wants to play need for speed or angry birds. I have to give up my phone to let her do it, which is what I do now. Then my girlfriend sends me a text I would really prefer her not see. Or a buddy sends something an off color joke or just uses language I’m not comfortable having her see. Worse yet, this happens when I’m going over a powerpoint presentation with my doc. Rather embarrassing, no? And, it’s just hard to be discrete period doing anything on a 7″ tablet while out in public.

I’m all for convergence. I had a Palm Pilot 1000 and was a devout Palm user for 13yrs. I’ve been syncing contacts, calendar, notes, tasks, emails and such as long as I can remember. I had the first Samsung palm phones and was using a smartphone for photos, movies, email, web and such before many. I teach others how to get on the technology bandwagon. I’ve even sold in the industry for quite a few years, granted in the US and not Europe. I think i can safely say I have a strong idea of what sells and what doesn’t. And selling to the masses a 7″ phone just isn’t happening. Even the Dell Streak at 5″ isn’t flying off the shelves. As was mentioned, you cut the bezel down and you might have something, but that takes you back into the realm of the HTC Evo at it’s current 4.3″. The footprint of the Evo, HD7, HD2, Droid X are close to the limit of what a majority of the people are willing to shove in their pockets every morning before they leave the house. I can give some exception to the gsm business crowd because they can ditch that 7″ tablet after 5pm and pop their SIM in an easier carrying phone no problem. That’s probably one scenario where I can see that happening. And I’d pray to the almighty I never get caught without my BT headset and have to hold that thing up to my ear and talk for awhile.

There are two people in this thread that can see people carrying a 7″ tablet as their only phone/communications device. That spells niche. Something that will appeal to a small group of people. And for them it’s a great idea. Wide adoption, the masses, I still don’t see it. And maybe I just have to chalk it up to cultural differences on different sides of the Atlantic.

All in all, these are fun devices that open up a lot of doors on the business and personal side. As battery technology improves a long with processor technology, these things will get to the point you walk in your front door, toss it in a dock, grab your keyboard and start surfing from your tv, working on files and so forth. have it all sync to your nas, phone, and so forth and never miss a beat. For that privilege, I don’t mine being a beta tester for these new android tablets.

On another note, I will say to avoid the tegra 2 ones running on Froyo. Froyo wasn’t made for dual core processors and many apps aren’t ready for them either. I’ve seen nothing but horror stories across all brands. Stick to the ARM8 processors for now unless you really want to suffer through the problems, whether honeycomb 2.3 gets pushed or they patch 2.2 like they did 1.5 for CDMA phones.

  68. photographer says:

    Hi Ryan,

I agree with you about my language gap. That is sometimes very hard looking for the right description what I like to say or to write. I do not like to have a dictionary by side because it takes to mauch time.

You described something I can follow your thoughts. But please believe me, the new usability is also to learn and to try more than a few days. It is much mor easy to use a bluetooth knob in the ear as getting out the cellphone off the pocket. Believe me.

Most of my collueges have big hands with big fingers and they are not able to write quickly sms with the very small keyboard of the little cellphone.

Swype is after learning to use it very very quickly. Of course it is not as quickly as using a real big keyboard, but it is much better using the mini knobs of the cellphone keyboards.

All in one it is a new form to to something other as before. But sometimes you have to change something.

The Palm Pilot was very difficult to use the first weeks, because you have to learn the new writing. I think you will agree with this too.

The Apple Newton was not really better. The Psion’s with their small keyboards are a little better, why they have had bigger knops on their keyboards.

Changing to Pocket PC 2000 devices was the next turnaround to learn to use it and so on and so on.

Now it is the same to learn to work efficient with the Galaxy Tab. It needs some time of course, but when you have recognized it, it is easy to me and to most others. But here must be also the will to do that. Without that, it may be better never to change a device. Please believe it too.

    Kind regards
    Hans

  71. Vakeros says:

Some good points made here – re. the never ending question of one device or two to have with you.
When you go for a two device strategy, then you can consider going for the Archos 70, as you don’t require some of the functionality of the Galaxy Tab. However, the 1024×600 res is worth a lot. 800×480 for this size device isn’t really good enough. That is a decent res. for a smaller 3-5″ device, but for the next size up you really need more. When you reach 10″ you really want 1280×1024 for 4:3 ratio or 1366×768 for 16:9. Not that you get that yet until you reach 12″.
The competition the Archos 70 faces is the Viewsonic 7″, very similiar specs, but the Viewsonic gives the Android Market Place and the ability to make calls + Froyo. The Archos has a better processor (I think)
Awaiting Chippy’s review for that too help me make my mind up – as a consumer I can’t really afford the Tab, but don’t want to spend £400 for a device that doesn’t give me the experience I want.

  72. Ryan says:

    Hey Hans,

I use swype every now and then, but I can’t stand using it for long emails or actual document work. It is quick for the down and dirty stuff though.

Through all this, I never thought to ask if anyone in Europe has a 4-4.3″ Android phone with a slide out keyboard? My Galaxy phone is the Epic and the only Galaxy with a slide out hard keyboard. The landscape slider is definitely liked by those with bigger hands, especially compared to the palm/blackberry types. With the slider you get efficient typing for the long haul. You also get full use of the screen. Something you lose when you use a slate phone or tablet. There was much talk about working with office docs on the larger screen of a tablet, but there wasn’t any talk about losing most of that screen to the on screen keyboard when typing. It was the biggest deal for me when I owned the Evo and then migrated to the Epic. Editing docs and spreadsheets is easy. I also have 4-way cursor buttons on the keyboard which make navigating through them easier when you’re using a dedicated keyboard.

My Archos 70 came today, and I could really care less about comparing it to the Galaxy spec wise. Could also care less about Scottsman’s childish post on the comparison between the two. But the Archos is narrower and lighter than the Galaxy tab. I was in my suit (for your business oriented folk), and I tried it out in the blazer pocket as well as the front pants pocket. I then walked around a while and went to a meeting for most of the evening. One word, annoying. For one, the thing is almost twice as wide (and it’s narrower than the Galaxy tab) as my Epic and about one and a half times longer. It’s also double the weight (and it’s lighter than the galaxy tab). It’s not a quick in and out of the pockets like a 4″ phone. And even if you were using a BT headset, you’re still pulling it out of your pocket to see who’s calling, and not all calls are going to be made via voice dialing over BT, but you need Froyo to do that which hasn’t dropped on the galaxy tab yet (archos too for that matter).

I just don’t see it. My Epic has all the functionality of a tablet and shares pretty much the same specs outside of the larger screen. The hard keyboard with full screen access is a big winner for business use. It’s definitely more portable and versatile. And I have no qualms carrying it before, during or after the business day whether I’m in a suit, scrubs or jeans.

I’d show screen shots of some of my stuff in Docs To Go, but this isn’t a typical forum, and I don’t use flickr or anything to host pics. I’d also show pics of the Epic and A70 together for comparison’s sake. You guys really need to have a Galaxy Tab in hand, but it seems no one here (but the scot) actually owns one yet. And I do have the android market on my Archos. It may not ship with it, but it’s an easy download

That never ending question about convergence and multiple devices or just one. I don’t really want to put the 10-12″ ones in here for comparison since this is pretty much down to a 4-4.3″ device and a 7″ device. Hands down the media experience is going to be better on the 7″ device. I don’t see it being better for business use when you have to type on screen though and lose half of your screen reae. And if you mention an outboard keyboard are you really down to one device? One device and a peripheral is still not one device. Though you’re on your way to leaving the laptop or netbook at home with that combo or making that type of combo a little easier to carry than a normal ultraportable or netbook.

I’m with you on the res Vakeros. Not as concerned in the 7″ range, but anything bigger, and i want 720 or 768. I couldn’t stand my netbook after a week and ended up with a dell e4200. You should check out the Herotab M10 with its 768p 10″ screen for less than $350. Looks interesting.

Okay, past my bedtime. Looking forward to hearing respnoses from
Hans and Vak when they finally get their hands on the galaxy tab. What phones do you currently have? And are there any 4+ inch sliders in Europe, or is the Epic the only one of its kind ?

Night all. Or do I say good morning at this point?

    Ryan

  73. Vakeros says:

Unfortunately until there still aren’t any >4″ phones with keyboards in the UK.
I am interested that you found the Archos in your jacket pocket annoying. Was this due to the weight?
The Psion 5 still holds the crown in my eyes for the best form factor. Stick in new hardware and you would have a potential all-in-one.
I use a Galaxy S (Tried HD2, but software wasn’t good enough.) If the Dell Streak does upgrade to Froyo, I might be tempted to head that way. With the tabs higher resolution it should be possible to have an onscreen keyboard which doesn’t take up a third of the screen. (like the origami dialkeys maybe.)
Price for the Tab has come down to £489.99 inc. Tax
However the Commtiva N700 (Viewsonic 7) is available for £299.99 inc. Tax.
I like to have something in my other pocket to counter-balance the weight of my wallet (usually full of coins…)

    Hi Vakeros,

I competely agree with you that the Psion Series 5 was the best form factor and as you say holds the crown.

If you remember how long it is past, that the Psion was delete and what it was able to do in that time, it was a great device for business users.

Synchronise with Outlook without any doubts.

It works great. But time goes by and today we have to look getting related devices, what is real difficult.

    Hi Ryan,

in my last comment I have forgotten something about using BT Headset.

I have different ringtones, so I can hear who is calling. Otherwise I take all calls, I have no problems with this.

In my car I can see the number who is calling, so it is not a disadvantage using BT for calls. It is also something, what is to learn by using and doing. Like changing usability as well.

    Hi Ryan,

let us make a compromise, because this would be a never ending story.

I do not use my pant pockets in the front. I ever use the rear pockets.

But it does not matter. You have decided, that the small factor of cellphones is the best for you. I can understand it and I can accept it.

At least it is ever your turn what you like to work and use with.

As you now know, I have decided to work and use with the bigger “Cellphone” like the Galaxy Tab. And I am satisfied. So I think, you now should accept this. I like the much more comfortable and bigger 7″ display for working with my documents without scolling so much, as I have to do with the small 4″ Display. And I think, you should accept this.

Others would use other equipments and I have to accept this.

I remember, as Palm startet with their PILOTs and also as they ends. It was not the big success, because user at least did not like their special writing methode. I also remember as Apple started their Newtons and get fail at least. Psion is not more available after having relative success in that market, but it was a niche. It needs about 15 years, as cellphones give users a lot of comfort using that and now they are successful and have increased a lot.

It will be the same with 7″, may be 5″ and 10″ Display devices in future too. I will bed on this. Users have different needings in different countries around the world. And everybody will find his personal favourite to its needs.

I will get in two years surely another new tab, because something has changend with better functions. Thats is.

Any other devices, you namend out are not filling my needs in full function, and point!

And you should also accept that.

What a furious battle ! Who won ? I couldn’t read it through the end ! Too bad because I still hesitate between the two devices : it’s all a matter of which way I will use it (mail, surf and ebook reading, mainly wifi and home), the way the whole thing is going to technically evolve (within 6 month, the Galaxy is beginning to be out of date, same as Archos 70 but for double the price), quality of hardware (screen, quality of construction)and support (Archos has bad reputation and I know it by experience). I guess there is no unique answer and everyone of us is going to weigh these parameters differently. One thing though, which may be another brainer : the weight. Archos is 25% lighter than Galaxy. Strong point for mobility and ereading ! On paper, I should go Archos. For peace of mind, I probably will buy Samsung.
Nota Bene : My name notwithstanding, Ich bin Franzose !

Is Notion ink Adam part of the discussion here?

Unfortunately, I don’t think so : too big. Let’s way for “Abel”, the 7″ little boy !!!

    Hello everybody,

I would like to know if I can use my 3G Usb Modem dongle to get 3G internet with this device? I know that is possible with Archos Windows 7 based tablet but not quite sure if Archos 70 running on Android platform could do it?

I appreciate your support in advance.

    Regards
